Job Description

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Explains and interprets provisions of fire codes to building owners, managers, and employers.
  • Issues summons for fire hazards not corrected on subsequent inspections and enforces code when responsible parties fail to cooperate.
  • Leads educational training related to fire and life safety procedures and practices.
  • Gathers and documents details of plans and submittal reviews; determines compliance and issues permits based on approved plans.
  • Provides technical expertise, advice, and guidance related to code compliance questions and interpretations.
  • Communicates with and supports customers regarding permit applications and other stakeholders, coordinates reviews with other departments, and recommends alternatives and solutions for maintaining compliance.

Typical Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma (or GED) and three (3) years of directly related experience and certified technical training in fire protection and prevention.

OR

  • An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job as listed above, unless otherwise subject to any other requirements set forth in law or regulation.

Licensing and Certifications:

  • Valid North Carolina Class C Drivers License with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain within 60 days of hire.
  • North Carolina certification as a Fire/Arson Investigator.
  • Possess a minimum of a probationary Fire Inspector Level II or higher certification issued through the NC Department of Insurance Code Officials Qualification Board. Fire Inspector Level III must be obtained within four (4) years of employment.

  • Utilizing communication and interpersonal skills to interact with coworkers, supervisors, the general public, and others to sufficiently exchange or convey information and receive work direction.

ADA and Other Requirements:

Positions in this class typically require: stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motions.

Medium Work:

  • Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Working Conditions:

  • Work is performed both in the field and in an indoor office environment.
  • Moderate exposure to hazardous physical conditions (such as mechanical parts, electrical currents, vibration, etc.).
  • Frequent exposure to atmospheric conditions (such as fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, etc.).
  • Moderate exposure to environmental conditions (such as disruptive people, imminent danger, or a threatening environment).
  • Moderate exposure to extreme temperatures, intense noise, and travel.
  • Frequent exposure to inadequate lighting and movement restrictions.
