Duties

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES INCLUDE:
  • Responds to crime scenes to secure scene boundaries and gather evidence.
  • Photographs and documents crime scenes; takes notes regarding observation and actions at crime scene.
  • Takes measurements and makes diagrams of scene and evidence.
  • Processes scene with appropriate powders, chemicals, and tapes to collect fingerprints; utilizes chemicals to test for the presence of blood.
  • Documents and collects swab samples of blood and other substances as needed.
  • Prepares reports and documents of activities performed at the scene.
  • Assists in collection and documentation of evidence and property at search warrants as needed.
  • Searches for and collects evidence at or around scene, marks, and packages same for placement in the property room.
  • Support criminal investigations with a variety of techniques to include digital evidence processing and lead development.
  • Process and analyze digital evidence contained in cell phones, computers, and other electronic devices, which includes reviewing sexually explicit and/or violent images and videos for evidentiary value on a regular basis.
  • Preserves the chain of custody.
  • Prepares crime scene investigation reports and cases for prosecution.
  • Analyzes evidence for identification, determination of involvement in other crimes.
  • Develop and maintain liaisons with personnel of all ranks and positions, sworn and non-sworn, within and outside the department.
  • Utilize a variety of technologically advanced computer programs and resources in a fast-paced work environment.
  • Continually learn to utilize and adapt to changes in record management software, database software, and other technologies and equipment.
  • Comply with all GCIC/NCIC laws and all Departmental policies and rules.
  • Work with sensitive/confidential information while maintaining confidentiality of such information.
  • Testifies in court as needed.
  • Good organizational skills.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
SCHEDULE:
  • The Unit schedule is currently 10-hour days, covering Monday through Friday. The Unit works a staggered schedule with shifts assigned by seniority. This is an on-call position with a rotating on-call schedule. Employees must be willing and available to work nights, holidays, and weekends as necessary to support department operations.

Requirements

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Three years’ experience in Crime Scene Investigations or bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with training emphasis in general science, chemistry, forensics, computer science, computer forensics, computer information systems; or related field, or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
  • Digital Evidence Processing Certification: Basic forensic collection, recovery, processing, preservation, analysis of digital evidence/or ability to learn.
  • Proficient with utilizing computers and computer software, including but not limited to; Microsoft Office Programs and internet-based programs, with advanced skills in Excel, PowerPoint, Word.
  • Ability to collect, evaluate, analyze, and interpret complex information and data from a variety of sources and perform detailed work with a high degree of accuracy.
  • Ability to use a variety of office machines, i.e., copier, fax, personal computer, telephone, etc.
  • Must be a U. S. Citizen or have the ability to produce documentation to establish legal ability to work in the United States.
  • Possession of a valid Georgia driver’s license and good driving history.
  • Perform most duties in a typical office environment with public contact and interruptions. The employee may experience prolonged sitting, occasional stooping and may be required to bend, kneel, crouch, reach and twist.
  • The employee will operate office equipment requiring repetitive hand movement and fine coordination including use of a computer keyboard.
  • Must be willing and able to work nights, weekends, and holidays and take part in an on-call rotation.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Master’s degree from an accredited college or university with training emphasis in general science, chemistry, forensics, computer science, computer forensics, computer information systems; or related field
  • Five-plus years’ experience as a full-time Crime Scene Investigator or Digital Forensics, working within a public safety environment.
  • Other certifications including Crime Scene Technician Certification or relevant training.
